Abstract Waterfront resources are important and special kind of natural resources in the marginal area between land and water. With the "T" strategy being carried on, the waterfront resources play a more important role in the regional development in China, which have a great potentiality with favorable development conditions.
In order to scientifically utilize the rare and non-renewable waterfront resources, and ensure Chaohu port development, this paper investigates the concrete situations of Chaohu reaches of Changjiang River and provides the basis for its regional economic development. First, the index system of assessing waterfront resource is constructed and the river bank is divided into 15 river sections;Second, the length of classified water-front resources is figured out by using remote sensing and geography information system. The grade condition of the water-front resources is evaluated through selecting indexes. The basic characteristics of the waterfront resources in the mainstream of Changjiang Rive in Chaohu are concluded. The results indicate that the ratio of the eminent waterfront resources of Chaohu is high; Third, the exploitation condition of the water-front resources is revealed including their respective space distribution and functions. In the light of the result, a comprehensive function orientation is advanced.
Also, the basic principles are devised for exploitation of waterfront resources in the paper. Meanwhile, it also analyzes the problems in the exploitation of waterfront resources at the present time. By the investigating hereinbefore, the construction plan of local ports is layed out. The keystone is to build local all-around ports to meet the future insufficiency, thereinto the Erba port is designed as the central port with the function of transfer hub for a large amount of bulk cargo. Then the strategies and suggestions on the exploitation of the riverbank resources and the plan of Chaohu Port are put forward. In order to sufficiently exploit the potentiality of the water front resources, protection and exploitation should be carefully taken into account for the sake of gaining both socio-ecological benefits, for example, implementing the overall protection and management of water-front resources, strengthening the information-based management of waterfront resources along the Chaohu reaches of the Changjiang River etc.
